Biography

Penny Travlou is a Lecturer in Cultural Geography and Theory at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, University of Edinburgh. Her research is interdisciplinary, focusing on the theories of space and place, politics of public space, digital culture, distributed networks, the commons and ethnography.

She has been Co-Investigator at the EU-funded (HERA JRP) project "Electronic Literature as a Model of Creativity and Innovation in Practice". Through her ethnographic fieldwork, she has looked at how creative networked communities form within transnational and transcultural contexts in a globalised and distributed communications environment. Penny has also been Principal Investigator on the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project "Creation and Publication of the Digital Manual: authority, authorship and voice".

Since July 2015, she has been a research team member in the project "Medellin: A Model For Future Cities?" awarded the Newton Institutional Links Grant from the British Council. Her research focus in this project is on how cultural heritage in Medellin can be seen afresh through new and emerging creative practices of collaborative and bottom-up values in the making of shared (common) spaces. She is also a member of the Management Commitee of a newly EU funded COST Action project: From Sharing to Caring: Examining Socio-Technical Aspects of the Collaborative Economy which runs from March 2017 to March 2021, bringing together participants from 25 European countries.

Penny teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate courses on contemporary architectural theory, cultural geography and qualitative research methods. She is Programme Director of the new MSc Cultural Landscapes. She also supervises PhD students across the Edinburgh College of Art.

Alongside her academic work, Penny is active on issues about urban commons and spatial justice and a core team member of the P2P Foundation, the international organisation focused on studying, researching, documenting and promoting peer-to-peer practices. She is the co-founder of Options FoodLab: a social enterprise for vulnerable people that focuses on cultural exchange, community building and employment opportunities for refugees and migrants in Athens.
