A Divided Republic? The Meaning of FrancePresentation and discussion of Books on Recent French Politics and History by Emile Chabal (University of Edinburgh) and Patrick Weil (Université Paris I Sorbonne / Yale Law School / CIRHUS) with Camille Robcis (Cornell University) and Jeremy Kessler (Columbia Law School). The November 13 attacks in Paris have been followed by vigorous debates, both in the national assembly and in society at large, about the nature of French citizenship, about the meaning of being a "Republic," and about the place of religious minorities in it - Muslims in primis. Never before has the notion of "Republic" been so unanimously reclaimed, adopted or celebrated. And yet its meaning has never been so fuzzy, to the point of being conflated with French nationhood. In order to shed light on these developments, Emile Chabal and Patrick Weil will talk about their recent books, A Divided Republic: nation, state and citizenship in contemporary France and Le Sens de la république, and engage in discussion with Jeremy Kessler and Camille Robcis.
