A lecture on the Russian Symbolist literary association and publishing house Musaget (1909-1917). University of Vienna, Austria. 13.12.2018.

Activity: Academic talk or presentation typesInvited talk

The talk focused on the new vision of culture as a synthesis of different modes of expression and on the role of Musaget in popularising European modernism in Russia. The main participants of this association had special meetings dedicated to philosophy, literature and music. Their aspiration to reinvent Goethe and proclaim him as a living patron went hand in hand with their interest in Classical Studies and in the mechanisms of uniting life and art through public performances and debates. The talk discussed how in their everyday life and in their works such writers and critics as Bely, Ellis promoted myth-making and mythologised self-representation. It was also argued that the impact of this group of writers and scholars on the development of Russian culture and literature in the 1920-1950s inside and outside Russia was immense.
