Other Refusals

Sharing images and film excerpts, this talk revolves around betrayal as a method in refusing abjectness. Alberta will present two key projects - performance workshop sorry, not sorry and her 2018/19 Margaret Tait commission between a whisper and a cry discussing how decolonial methods such as betrayal and refusal can create encounters, which encourage mutual empathy, healing and release.

Alberta Whittle is an artist based in Glasgow. Her interdisciplinary practice speaks of memory, trauma, tensions between the land, the sea and the privilege of geography.

Alberta has shared her work in various solo and group shows, including The Showroom, London (2018), Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), Glasgow (2018/19), RAW Material, Dakar (2018), National Art Gallery, Nassau (2018), the Apartheid Museum and Goethe On Main, Johannesburg (2017), the Johannesburg Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, Italy (2015), FRAMER FRAMED, Amsterdam (2015) and at the BOZAR, Brussels (2014). In 2019, she will be showing at the 13th Havana Biennal, (DCA) Dundee Contemporary Art and Edinburgh Printmakers. A Principal’s Fellow at ECA, Alberta is the 2018 recipient of the 2018/19 Margaret Tait Award.
