Description
ArcInTex is a network where Architecture, Interaction Design and Textiles join forces in developing ideas, techniques, methods and programs for new perspectives on design for building, dwelling and living. Jessamy Kelly, Sarah Kettley and Patricia Wu Wu co-organised a conference, exhibition and workshop series, which was hosted by the RAFT research group. We ran 4 workshops, including local innovators and researchers at ECA, Edinburgh Napier University, plus a line-up of 12 local makers and researchers talking about their work. From the 9th – 11th April 2018 we ran 4 hands on workshops, as follows:Dancing Lights This workshop was structured around three days of exploring the possibilities offered by haptic CAD modelling as a more intuitive way to create objects that relate to the body and can be realised through 3D printing, in conjunction with microelectronic circuits that respond dynamically to the environment and the human body.Organisers Ann Marie Shillito (Anarkik3D) and Kathy Vones
Material Pairings In this workshop we explored glass making processes and how through collaborative making new approaches can be developed between participants from different disciplines. The experimental nature of the workshop was based on experiential learning and was led by the creative environment and context of the combination of glass making techniques with textiles as the stimulus and inspiration for the workshop.Organisers: Jessamy Kelly, Geoff Mann, Ingrid Phillips & Diego Zamora
Xeno-Genes invited participants to explore a withdrawn world through the making of speculative narratives. Participants engaged collaboratively in visualising and composing LiDAR scanned data sets using computation and simulation techniques. Furthermore, a visit to ASCUS Lab for a hands-on meditation with living organisms was carried out. Participants were encouraged to think through the lens of non-human perspectives, proliferating new thought-species to lure the potential of the xeno-gene. Such processes aimed to spark new dialogues and research findings about the role of creative practice in the age of Anthropocene and Extinction.Organisers: Patricia Wu Wu, Asad Khan.
Wearing Data; the Fabric of Social BecomingIn this workshop participants were asked to provoke, critique and debate questions relating to data and the body. With increasing amount of wearable devices and sensors capturing quantified self data, health data, environmental data and IoT data there are possibilities of understanding, recording and sharing intimate personal events and feelings. Participants explored these concepts through tangible mapping and making exercises and develop basic skills with the Particle Photon in order to create playful wearable data prototypes.Organisers: Bettina Nissen, Dave Murray-Rust, Sarah Kettley and Sophia Lycouris.
A Conference was held on the 12th - 13th April 2018, the 12 speakers included: Sophia Lycouris, Sarah Taylor/Sara Robertson, Kathy Vones, Bev Hood, ASCUS, Ann Marie Shillito, Jennifer Gray, Bettina Nissen, Jessamy Kelly, Rachel Harkness, Susan Fallouh & Crsitina Nan.
