Description
Guest Lecture: The Role of Artists in Gentrification Processes: The Case of AthensIn this talk, I discuss the role of the arts and artists in the so-called ‘gentrification project’. I will first look at the key theories and definition(s) of gentrification and then move to how cultural production and mostly cultural consumption have been linked to gentrification. Here, I will focus on the paradox of artists’ role in gentrification, asking whether they are indeed – partly – responsible for the gentrification of certain neighbourhoods. The last part of the talk will focus on the case of Athens and how gentrification has been evolved in certain neighbourhoods such as Metaxourgio since the Olympic Games in 2004 and during the financial crisis and Documenta14.
