Description

In Pursuit of Beauty: Mal Burkinshaw at the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas, Edinburgh Fringe 2014

Mal Burkinshaw, Head of fashion at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), is performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a show called In Pursuit of Beauty. Debating whether fashion should be socially responsible, Mal appeared as part of the Beltane Public Engagement Network’s Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas. In his show, he invited audience members to question if, and how, the fashion industry could do more to communicate healthier and more diverse beauty ideas. Drawing on collaborative teaching and research with the All Walks Beyond the Catwalk Diversity Network, he will showcase ECA students’ designs on the theme of diversity, and debate with experts about the responsibilities the fashion industry has towards consumers. The Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas featured debate, discussion and discourse in the company of some of the fiercest intellects Scotland has to offer. It debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013. Curated by Beltane, and produced by Fair Pley, The Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas is compéred by the comedian, presenter and festival director, Susan Morrison. In 2014 there were 24 shows, featuring researchers from the University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh Napier, the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and St Andrews University and organisations including Planning Aid for Scotland and Novo Science.
