Biotechnology Consortium

Activity: Consultancy typesContribution to the work of national or international committees and working groups

Description

A consortium of lawyers, scientists, social scientists, governmental agencies and policy-makers was established to examine the protection, promotion and regulation of biotechnology in developing countries. The index case will be Argentina, where links have already been established and matters are ripe for exploration. It is hoped that later the work can be extended to South Africa. Focus will be on the role of law as a regulatory/ promotional tool, taking a comparative foresight perspective with the objective of 'mapping' the processes of developing patent and regulatory policies to identify lessons for other countries or regions. Consortium researchers will spend sustained periods of time between the collaborative centres, and expert meetings will occur regularly.
