Description

As part of the BRAID Programme Launch Event, the work 'The Dust [n]Forcer' was exhibited.

The Dust [n]Forcer (2019-2021) is a digital fashion film, made in collaboration with architecture scholar and computational designer Dr Asad Khan. The work conceptualises the fashioning of the human body as a geological force, using forensic grade LiDAR scanning to capture the choreographic movements of the designer’s body as an algorithmic swarm of point-cloud dust particles. The design process involves strategies of machine and algorithmic subversion. Wrapping the body in reflective surfaces and different materialities, acting as ‘stealth objects’ that enforce noise, introduces randomness into the ultra-precise point cloud, against the forensic precision of remote-sensing technologies. These subversions appear as data noise, leading to fragmentations in the point-cloud scans; a schism that algorithmically collides the data captured of the body with the physical environment. Rather than seen as unwanted machine errors, here these schisms serve as a conjuring device into its latent algorithmically aesthetics. It is a space of contingencies and chance-based emergent patterns, where boundaries between volume and space, form and surface, body and ground, dissolve. Alongside the moving image, are a series of diagrams that map out the choreographed movement. These diagrams treat the body as a cartographic tool, by re-tracing gestures and interactions into new pathways for performance.

In a time where every aspect of our existence is a source of extraction and exploitation, the generated design works repurpose technologies of surveillance through harnessing machine fallacies and surverting assumptions of precision, to reimagine human-machine relationships.
