Description
This talk will discuss the emergence of a new tool for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), called DoxyPEP, and consider its impact on society. I explore whether medicine can change the social inequalities that underlie sustained STI transmission, which significantly affect LGBTQ+ communities, and intervene in increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within sexual healthcare. Based upon interviews with doctors and nurses in the UK, I demonstrate how safer sex may transform in the coming years as DoxyPEP becomes normalised in society. I suggest that medicine may play a key role in facilitating new safer sex practices in the future.
This is an invited talk as part of the 2025 STEMinar series at the Open University.
