The second in our series of workshops on child/adolescent-animal interactions provides an overview of the way children describe their relationships with pets, drawing on our qualitative research, and findings from large scale surveys that incorporated our measure of attachment to pets. We examines both positive and negative emotional attachments that develop with pet animals that can often mirror other relationships in children’s lives or, alternatively, provide a particular kind of relationship that is missing elsewhere. We reflected on the possibility that pet animals are used as outlets for emotional distress.
