Conference on 155 Years of Indians in South Africa

Description

I spoke about the AHRC 'Becoming Coolies' research project. Although the focus of the conference was on South Africa, the participation of scholars beyond South Africa enabled researchers in the field of diaspora studies to reflect on broader theoretical issues in conceptualising the Indian diaspora. The conference aimed to bring together researchers and academics to engage in critical discussion on a range of themes and topics that relate to South African Indians. The decision was made at the end of the conference to establish a centre for Indian Studies, within the University of Kwa-Zulu-Natal. Participants in the “Becoming Coolies” project were recruited.
