Description
Curating an exhibition of the work of El Anatsui had been on our Director Tessa Giblin’s bucket list for a long time. That Anatsui made a new work for this exhibition, and that it was the first UK survey of his work, added to everything that made Scottish Book Mission Depot Keta remarkable. Five years in the making, the epic journey of realizing this exhibition included working out how to use the façade of the Old College building and how to bring Anatsui to Edinburgh to receive an honorary degree.Telling stories about how this all came together—seeing record numbers of visitors for Talbot Rice Gallery—Tessa took visitors behind the scenes and introduced what it was about this artwork that was so important. What did El Anatsui’s studio look like? How did they bring together works of this scale? What drove the curatorial thinking for this kind of exhibition? This was your opportunity to find out.
