Description
In this talk I problematise the important notion of ethics in Intercultural Communication. In doing so I reject the liberal doxa that Intercultural Communication should be conceptualised along the lines of non-conflict with the other, e.g., through understanding the other or having a dialogue with the other. Instead, I propose conceptualising the self and other relation in Intercultural Communication as a permanent antagonism, a permanent crisis, without resolution. In outlining this argument, I discuss some conceptual and practical issues surrounding some postpositivist approaches and offer a way forward for Intercultural Communication through an engagement with ethics from a Critical Realist perspective.
