This panel discussion is brought to you by the team who ran the first University of Edinburgh event for Suicide Memorial Day, in November 2021. This was held to remember those who have died by suicide and those who survive suicide loss, and to help the University community move from trauma denial to trauma awareness. We know from research that speaking of suicide does not increase its likelihood, but helps people to feel more secure and grounded, and more able to work with and transform situations. Conversely, when we avoid mention of suicide, we increase fear around it, and make it more difficult for people to speak about their grief, or anxieties, or to let others know that they experience suicidal thoughts. We therefore invite you to join us for sensitive and courageous discussion of the healing benefits of trauma awareness and to explore how we can create safe spaces to explore what is a difficult and painful subject area. Our intention is to promote understanding of how such spaces can be co-created and why these are so crucially important when we seek to evolve from trauma denial to trauma awareness. We recognise that Mental Health (including suicidality) is not an easy subject to come and listen to, learn about and discuss. We therefore ask that those attending come with compassion in their hearts and with an open curious mindset. And we ask that you take care of yourselves: If you suspect that any of the material raised may upset or trigger you, please take care in deciding whether to attend and please do seek appropriate advice.
