Description

Doors Open Day: ZONE architects' purpose built studio, north Edinburgh

Zone architects' purpose built studios (design/ project development 2002-2006) was selected to be opened to the public as part of the Cockburn Association's popular Doors' Open Day annual event. Around 80 visitors, design-making activities for children, and a visual presentation of the design and construction of the office were offered in the new studio space. Ewing, S 'Spaces of Design: workspace in the city' featured in D-ZINE 2, as part of SixCities Design Festival (Scotland) (2006). "Paul Simmons of Timorous Beasties raised a question in D-ZINE 1 about the support of small design businesses. “Show me a Scot who boasts lots of studio space in his city and I’ll show you a liar.” What do designers in different fields in Scotland think about this, and how have they created their own working places? Suzanne Ewing of zone architects interviewed a selection in February 2007 and the results are published here: offering a snapshot view into workplaces of the sixcities- of a graphic illustrator, a graphic designer, a lighting designer, a product designer, an architect, two furniture makers, and a textile designer. The process of zone architects creating a new studio space to work in has made us think more precisely about the design of working places. Designers do care about the environments they work in, and often they act as an extension of company attitude, ethos and product. While the workplaces (spaces of design) shown here are quite different in character, and house quite different design activities, overall quality of the environment, good daylight and bespoke use/activity are consistent themes"
