Brain Awareness Week

The BAW week which is recognised internationally seeks to inform the public about the brain. At U of E, Department of Neuroscience, primary schoolchildren were invited to sessions (usually around 100 children in each session) which were aimed at raising their awareness of the brain. Initially they were invited to enter an art competition with a colour drawing of their interpretation of “How the brain works". Lectures introduced the children to how we examine the brain e.g MRI scanning, and how the brain interprets the surrounding environment. Practical demonstrations explored a 3D brain model, experts in brain physiology allowed the children to handle real human brains and finally sessions explored many optical illusions which demonstrate “How the brain works".
