Description

Engagement and Involvement Practices in Abortion Care: Collectively Envisioning Futures

On Thursday, 11th July 2024, from 12 to 5 pm, a half-day interactive workshop was held at the University of Edinburgh’s Main Library, 6th Floor, Centre for Research Collections, Research Suite, George Square, Edinburgh (EH8 9LJ).

This in-person, collaborative workshop focused on developing a shared understanding of current engagement and involvement practices in abortion care, often described as ‘community engagement’ and ‘patient and public involvement and engagement.’ The event brought together partners from across the field of abortion care—including activists, community organizations, academics, and health professionals—to collectively envision futures for meaningful involvement in research, practice, and policy.

Participants engaged in a variety of interactive activities that facilitated knowledge exchange and exploration of new possibilities for advancing involvement practices in abortion care.

The workshop was hosted by Nicola Boydell from the Usher Institute and Centre for Biomedicine, Self & Society at the University of Edinburgh, in collaboration with AndThen, a Glasgow-based futures-oriented design agency with extensive expertise in academic, third, and public sector development. AndThen facilitated the session, ensuring a dynamic and engaging experience for all participants.

Given the interactive nature of the activities, the workshop was held in person.
