Description

Asking the right question(s): Towards the Corpus of Scottish Witchcraft Trial Records. In this presentation I set out a rationale and methodology for constructing a linguistic corpus of witchcraft trials carried out in Scotland between 1563 and 1736. The corpus will make use of the socio-historical metadata compiled at the School of History (University of Edinburgh) and available online since 2003 as the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft (SSW). The documents referenced in the SSW are available in a variety of formats, scattered across collections of manuscripts and printed editions, accessible in archives and online. I am particularly interested in addressing the technical challenges involved in the project and fleshing out a research question (or a series of research questions) which would drive the construction and annotation of the corpus.
