'Law, Modernity and the Place of European Legal History' Abstract: The aim of this paper is to assess the place of European legal history as a teaching subject as well as an emerging field of research in the context of legal education in Europe. In doing so, this paper will provide an overview of current scholarly debates concerning European legal history while at the same time addressing larger issues such as the purpose of legal education, the relationship between historic law teaching and the contemporary legal discourse and the engagement of the European Union with Europe’s legal past.
