This workshop is open to current fashion students, recent graduates, and independent designers.
The fashion industry is primarily visual; whether we buy online, read fashion magazines, shop on the high street or explore fashion through social media, the principal sense that we use is sight. But around one person in every thirty is registered blind or visually impaired in the UK.
In this workshop, we will consider alternative sensory approaches to design and fashion writing, directed by the experiences of people who are visually impaired or blind, who may experience fashion in a different way to you. You will be led through a series of sensory deprivation and reductive activities that explore tactility, sound and smell which will help you to develop an empathic approach to your work and consider the notion that your customer base is diverse and may experience fashion in a very different way to you.
You will be asked to consider the impact these activities might have on your creative process and either apply your findings to your own work or to a set design brief. You are encouraged to bring existing design projects, website development, blogs or magazines to get support with the development of these.
At the end of the workshop, there will be an opportunity for open discussion where you will have the chance to talk about the impact the workshop might have on your creative design process and your awareness of accessibility within fashion
