Description
This was an online interactive event that aimed to increase awareness about sedentary behaviour, highlighting its consequences and the benefits of moving more. We had 65 people registered to the event (it was capped at 65) and had 30 participants attending. We got feedback from 8 participants, all of them agreeing that the event was worth attending (6 strongly agreed). Seven said they plan to make a change or do something that they wouldn’t otherwise have done, and all of them said they plan to share what they have learned with others.Detailed description
Sedentary behaviour is a public health hazard with established adverse physical and mental health outcomes. The UK Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that adults should minimise the time spent sedentary, and break up long periods of inactivity. COVID-19 has permanently changed the way many of us work, and for large sectors of the population, spending at least a portion of the working week in a home environment will become part of the ‘new normal’ working landscape. However, working at home is associated with increased sedentary behaviour compared to the office environment, as evidenced by recent research. Our research projects (MRC, iTPA, ESRC IAA) have also identified intervention strategies to reduce sedentary behaviour while working from home including education, tools (e.g. yoga breaks) and prompts (e.g. using MS teams plugin).
The event aimed to increase awareness about sedentary behaviour, highlighting its consequences and the benefits of moving more. This was a 60-minute online interactive session. During the session, the project team provided an introduction to sedentary behaviour and its consequences, highlighting statistics relating to sedentary behaviour while working from home, and the benefits of moving more. Participants were invited to share their experiences relating to sedentary behaviour while working from home in break-out rooms. We then had a 5-minute live yoga break. Finally, the team shared some ideas and strategies to break up sitting in the home environment. Participants had access to some resources they could try out for a week.
