'Film, endurance, and exhaustion'

Activity: Academic talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description

I gave an invited talk for staff and research students in film and media studies at the University of Stirling. The talk explored the notion of cinema as an endurance test, and focused particularly on films with marathon running times. I introduced and discussed films by Lav Diaz, a director from the Philippines whose films are often many hours in length. I outlined the challenges to general understandings of cinema that are effected when the notion of 'cinema as entertainment' is jettisoned in favour of 'cinema as a challenge to sit through'.
