Description
Anderson and Murayama have designed a fission-fusion artwork. This is based on Tokyo-based artist Goro Murayama's practice of creating cellular drawings to explore creativity in the age of computing. This version adds a second stage, suggested by Anderson, involving adoption and adaptation of symbols as a mode of exploring the relation between origin status and cultural drift. Anderson invited Ezra Course to film the activity using time lapse in order to capture the emergence of the artwork, and this footage will then by turned into an artwork in itself by Anderson and Murayama. The artwork explores patterns in nature, culture and computing and the emergence of complexity. In this half-day workshop, devised and led by Miranda Anderson and Goro Murayama, we were joined by two EFI staff members (artist Jimmy Turner and Eeva Holt) and two interdisciplinary EFI students (Mara Strang and Aisha Zealey). The artwork we began then travelled to the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was added to be to by participants in Anderson's RSE & Japan Society for the Promotion of Science project on 'Fission-Fusion Perspectives and Complex Issues' Symposium.
The workshop was organised by Miranda Anderson with Goro Murayama. We warmly thank Peter Bentley of EFI Maker Space for his help and support by hosting the workshop and providing film equipment and Jennifer Williams of Utopia Lab (EFI).
