Description

Future of Cities event hosted by Prospect Magazine, in association with the Government Office for Science

The Future of Cities programme is a partnership between the Government Office for Science and Prospect Magazine to engage on what needs the UK’s cities have for future growth. It will look at the capital and social infrastructure requirements of our cities and include focus on the partnerships needed to bring them to fruition. It will consider the changing nature of our demographics and population size and what makes a city successful. It will also consider successful adaptions by cities (predominantly UK but looking at lessons elsewhere) and analyse the impact of a range of factors in the requirements of our cities (including but not limited to ageing, household sizes, demand for employment, housing) and seek to determine future demand for, for example, services such as health, education, energy, technology, retail, and transport. The scope of the research and commissioned papers is significant, and represents the most detailed and holistic approach yet undertaken to identify the changes in, and requirements of, our cities.Running from January to February 2015, the programme will consist of four events in different cities. This event will feature a panel discussion, chaired by Prospect and featuring Sir Mark Walport,UK Government Chief Scientific Advisor;Sir Alan Wilson, Professor of Urban and Regional Systems, UCL;Kevin Murray, Director, Kevin Murray Associates, Honorary Professor of Planning at Glasgow University and Dr Sara Tilley, Research Associate, The University of Edinburgh
