Distributed creativity: how is new work understood and shaped by an improvising group?

Chaired and contributed to panel discussion at GIOFest VII, Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow. Deatils from the programme: Distributed creativity: how is new work understood and shaped by an improvising group? Improvisation challenges many assumptions about creativity. Its increasing popularity and diversity has brought researchers and improvisers together to explore how we are able to share the creation of new work in real time. In tandem with the creation of a new international group exploring interdisciplinary improvising (Concurrent Research Network, Edinburgh College of Art), a panel of key people involved in recent studies will discuss with the audience how individual and shared ideas of music are balanced in performance; what difference it makes to know who you’re improvising with; and how studies might change the ways we improvise (and vice versa).
