Description

Introducing The Empty Space - a stunning exhibition of work by students from the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, examining and re-imagining the iconic Dalkeith Road office complex.

18 students have been exploring ’emptiness’ in unused or neglected parts of the city’s built fabric. The former Scottish Widows HQ at 15 Dalkeith Road – our 2023 venue – was one of the empty spaces they studied.

Over 12 weeks the students practised and tested audio, video and drawn techniques on-site to record the building’s spaces as ‘bare stages’, already latent with crossings of light, sound, temperature, ecologies and traces of past events and occupation.

Seek out the resulting installations at Hidden Door 2023, returned to the site that inspired them, to learn more about the following projects:

Is a Space defined by Line? by Gracie Thornham and Amber Woodward

An Exercise in Gloam by Georgie Inchbald, Devon Tabata and Charlotte Cole

A Theatre of Human Movement by Emily Grills, Isla Hibberd and Alon Shahar

Sound as a Means to Navigation by Alexandre Langlois, Vasilisa Litvinenko and Daniel Yanez-Cunningham

Hidden Door opens up forgotten urban spaces for the public to explore and discover incredible music, art, theatre, film, dance, spoken word and more. Through our festivals we reveal hidden parts of the city and showcase new and emerging artists, musicians, theatre and film makers.
