Description
Instinct, Image & Imagination: Landscape as Sign LanguageThis photographic exhibition “Image, Instict, Imagination”, is a collaboration between the renown geographer Jay Appleton and photographer Simon Warner.' The exhibition which I co-organise with Simon Warner and is hosted by the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, explores key categories of Prospect, Refuge and Hazard as described in Professor Appleton’s book “The Experience of Landscape” (1975). Simon Warner's colour photographs, many being shown for the first time, depict views across England, Wales and Scotland, and the exhibition ends with a group of pictures on which visitors can try out their own newly-acquired skills of landscape interpretation. Extracts from Jay Appleton’s recent poetry also feature, offering a literary perspective on his theories and underlining the essential cross-disciplinarity of his thought.
