International Mokuhanga Conference

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in conference

Description

This is the second international conference on the historically prominent Japanese wood block technique (mokuhanga). While widely used in the contemporary art context, there has been little critical debate on the subject other than in historical terms. Based on a case study of artists Rebecca Salter (UK) and Brook Andrew (Australia), my contribution to the conference will be a paper with the title ‘Thinking Contemporary Art through Mokuhanga’. The paper aims to provide a model for positioning mokuhanga within the contemporary global art context in investigating the role of craft in contemporary art, especially notions of ‘re-skilling’ and ‘de-skilling’, as argued by British art historian John Roberts.
