Description
The lecture is designed to introduce the methodological and conceptual challenges of conducting Chinese intellectual history in the West. While this reevaluation of methodology and hermeneutic practices in intercultural intellectual studies may eventually aim to develop more comprehensive diachronic perspectives—connecting antiquity with modernity—this introductory course will focus on examples that are more conceptually familiar (historical proximity) to a contemporary Western audience. As the main illustrative example of the advantages and limitations, I will examine the "Chinese Science and the View on Life" debate (1923–1924), interpreting it within the broader context of the modernization of Chinese academic philosophy during Republican China. The ultimate goal of this lecture is to equip students with a set of basic semiotic, linguistic, and historical tools, alongside a small collection of hermeneutic techniques. These resources will enhance the accuracy and creativity of their own research in what could be considered the "transcultural" intellectual history of humanity.
To foster a more interactive lecture environment, attendees will receive handouts and primary historical readings. These will include my forthcoming anthology, Science and the View on Life, and an edited volume featuring selected translations and studies on Bertrand Russell’s visit to China
