Description
Invited talk at Italian Cultural Institute in Hamburg.Abstract: Bilingualism in all languages, regardless of economic prestige and diffusion, is an opportunity to give children and adults a series of social, linguistic and cognitive benefits. However, bilingualism, and language learning in general, are often appreciated only if they involve 'useful' languages, i.e. languages with a wide international diffusion or with political or economic value: this generally excludes many minority languages, both indigenous and immigrant. In the first part of the conference Antonella Sorace will illustrate some advantages of bilingualism from the point of view of scientific research, also presenting recent data on bilingualism in minority languages. In the second part she will demonstrate how spreading correct information on bilingualism contributes to valorising and maintaining linguistic diversity as an important resource for individuals and society.
