Invited Lecture: Ego economies. Italo Svevo and the line segment – National University of Ireland Galway, 31 October 2013

Description

ABSTRACT - With “Ego economies” I draw, literally, three straights lines. In this way I expose the Svevian subject in the strategic positions which he adopts on the life segment. Time doesn't get cheated (extended) on any of our three paradigms. Yet the mobility acquired within it helps maintain the fiction of the unsuppressable consciousness placed at life's endpoint (“il vecchione”. “il vegliardo”). To complement the line, the predatory instinct will come into our equation, allowing us to connect two distant episodes of Svevo's writing: the seagull scene in “Una vita” and the fishing expeditions of “La coscienza di Zeno”.
