Storm Gallery: Weathering Drawing

Storm Gallery is an ongoing project by Metis, based upon a set of drawings that were water damaged during the passage of Hurricane Irene across the east coast of the USA in 2011. The sheets – which concern Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown’s extension to the National Gallery in London – had adhered upon one another, producing a densely compacted pile of material in which the drawn description of the architecture had become intensely complicated by displaced overlays, water staining, and the growth of mould, as well as chemical interaction between the sheets (that sometimes led them to literally bite into one another). As an artefact, this was a complex drawing that resulted from the mingling of human and nonhuman agencies across an extended time period. The talk will reconstruct the various ways Metis explode this curious drawing amalgam, and its eventual exhibition at A83 gallery in New York.
