Monsters Re-visited: the Fantastic Creatures of Japan

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in conference

Description

The Center for Global Research Initiatives, University of Hyogo, Kobe, will host a symposium on yôkai and other fantastic creatures of Japan, featuring a special exhibition with works from Adam Cooley’s collection “Monstrous Dreams. Yôkai of Japan.” We invite presentation proposals focusing on yôkai that approach the topic from various perspectives: oral sessions presenting academic research (from the fields of folklore studies, literature, anthropology), or fiction (short works of fiction centering on yôkai), and performance presentations of visual arts. The purpose of the symposium, in addition to connecting the academia with creative and visual arts through a topic of broad interest, is to create a volume of papers (both academic and creative) that explain and revisit yôkai from a 21st century perspective.
