Noblesse oblige: Les publications de Ferdinand de Saussure, 1901-1912

Activity: Academic talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

In this colloquium marking the centenary of the posthumous publication of Saussure's collected works, my paper surveys those of the 20th century. Until the final one, they follow a common theme of uncovering false etymologies, often prompted by illusions created by the writing system. The final paper he published before his death takes a different direction, however, and I weigh the evidence that at this final stage of his thought he was opening new horizons concerning sound symbolism and affectivity, to both of which he is generally thought of as resistent.
