The objective of this study was to analytically quantify the potential benefits to photovoltaic array tracking systems by entering a so-called ‘cloud mode’ under certain weather conditions. This cloud mode would place all panels horizontal to the ground, so that they could absorb the greatest amount of diffuse solar irradiance under the cloudy conditions. This study identified the optimal trigger points under which the array should transition into cloud mode; it does this by identifying the optimal diffuse threshold (fraction of total solar irradiation which is diffuse) and the optimal length of time that this condition must be met for.
