Description

This event brought together academics and museum professionals from Scotland and beyond, to talk about the politics involved in the collection, display and restitution of colonial-era acquisitions.
In my paper 'The Colour of Skulls: rethinking the University of Edinburgh skull collection' i presented my ongoing analysis of the colour of the skulls in the collection and the artwork which has been made in response to this analysis. I proposed that the colours which resulted from the treatment of the skulls following the individuals' deaths, could be used to unite peoples instead of find differences based on race.
At the same event I also co-presented another paper, 'Toxic Waste' with Dr Linda Fibiger and Dr John Harries. In this paper we discussed the disposal of the full sized photograph of the skull collection in the Natural History of Vienna, which featured in Dead Images in 2018.
