Description

Present Voices, Future Lives was a travelling exhibition and consultation vehicle, commissioned by the Scottish Government and Architecture and Design Scotland (A+DS) which toured around Scotland in November and December 2019. The exhibition and attendant workshops engaged with local communities in twelve different locations in order to inform and gather views and opinions on the future of housing in Scotland. The views collected through the consultation and the travelling exhibition will help to inform the Scottish Government’s v ‘Housing to 2040’ vision and route map, which it is aiming to be published in summer 2020.
The exhibition was designed, curated and toured by a multi-disciplinary team including academic staff from the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Edinburgh, award winning Scottish Architecture Practice Collective Architecture and Peak 15 Design, Chris Leslie Productions and Gaia research group.
The exhibition presented information on ‘Ways of Living’ in Scotland both historically and in the present and also a series of key challenges faced by Scottish Society in relation to how and where we will live in the future. These challenges included the environment and global climate emergency, well-being and making healthy places, changing work patterns and changing communities. Workshop sessions then asked participants what likes and concerns they have in relation to how they live and also asked them to rate the importance of the different challenges presented. Other workshop sessions included a community mapping exercise and a local area (or place?) assessment using the Place Standard Tool.
Data gathered from these workshops has been analysed by the project team and is summarised in the results and discussion sections of this document. Data analytics in the form of spread-sheets and other forms is available in the Present Voices, Future Lives Project Digital Archive along with examples of raw data sheets.
Key findings include that the key concern of the participants in relation to their housing and ways of living was the environment as reflected through the global climate emergency. This concern was closely followed by the challenge of maintaining the well-being of the Scottish population through the design of ‘healthy places’. Thirdly, younger participants in particular were concerned about changing patterns of working and the effect of new technologies on the supply of jobs.
