Description

On Friday, 28th February 2025, Queering Abortion: Conversations Across Communities took place at The Pleasance Cabaret Bar, Edinburgh. This event brought together Phil Samba (The Love Tank), Oliver Ellis (Waverley Care), and Nicola Boydell (University of Edinburgh) for a panel discussion and small group conversations exploring what it means to queer abortion. The speakers reflected on the historical and current landscape of abortion care, discussing how to work towards more inclusive, community-led approaches to abortion care.
Participants explored key questions such as: How can peer- and community-led approaches support people seeking abortion? What can abortion care learn from HIV, PrEP, and disability activism? The event provided a space for shared learning, open dialogue, and practical steps towards action.
This workshop was part of The Love Hub on the Road: Edinburgh Edition, a collaboration between The Love Tank and the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society. Over two days, the The Love Hub series featured six events covering themes such as activism, mutual aid, care, performance, research, disability justice and abortion justice.
The Love Hub formed part of a broader Reflective Events series, 'Between Biomedicine, Self and Society', held from 26th to 28th February 2025. This series reflected upon and celebrated the work and achievements of the Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society.
