Multimodal technologies—including Artificial Intelligence—are profoundly altering how individuals engage with writing and reading, impacting education and wellbeing. In this session, Prof. Sarah McGeown and Dr. Patrick Errington will explore the future of literacy, presenting research conducted by the Literacy Lab at the University of Edinburgh.Prof. Sarah McGeown will discuss how a variety of technologies can contribute to developing literacies, including a discussion of the role of AI in the future of literacy changing reading habits in the UK. In particular, Prof. McGeown will discuss five key themes that are central to the future of books and reading—Enjoy, Engage, Empower, Enrich, and Expand—while, at the same time, looking at how we can move beyond restricted conceptions of conventional literacy contexts.
Dr. Patrick Errington will introduce his work on ReWriting Wor(l)ds: an exciting UKRI funded, transdisciplinary programme of research focused on how creative, play-based interaction with poetry can enhance young people's aesthetic experience and understanding, promote long-term literacy engagement, and improve daily lives. Dr. Errington will also introduce ReWriter: a forthcoming mobile platform promoting creative, play-based interaction with poetry and the sharing of new creations.
