Bauhaus Festival 2019 Festival School FUNDAMENTAL 20.3.–24.3.2019
School FUNDAMENTAL was an international festival celebrating art and design education on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus. The Bauhaus addressed modernism first and foremost through education. Although the image of the Bauhaus today is dominated by the things it produced materially as representations of classical modernism, historically speaking the Bauhaus was primarily a school, the majority of whose founders were artists and who addressed issues concerning the organisation of human existence in the modern age against the background of the existential upheaval of the First World War that people had lived through. The Bauhaus is yet again assuming its place as a model of learning and educational experimentation; with its open curriculum, its spatial praxis in the workshops linking up research and design, studies and application, its structure and openness towards other disciplines and kinds of knowledge, which integrates all artisticgenres. Meanwhile however, adistancing from and criticism of the “Bauhaus Model” have also been upcoming for some time now in the debates on art and design education; its premises–here most of all the “creative paradigm” and the associated subject concepts–are undergoing a revision. The Festival discusses reception, criticism and legacy of the Bauhaus educational system in the most efficacious place of the avant-garde school–in the Bauhaus in Dessau. Based on the extra-mural educational programme of the Academy of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, the Festival sees itself as platform and test field of international school models and learning experiments from the past and present. For five days, the Festival offers an networked programme, with smaller, concentrated study situations and learning experiments, a popularly conceived abundance of participatory public classrooms and fab labs, lecture performances and learning enjoyment for everyone of every age, sex and ethnicity who is thirsting for knowledge. The programme is planned to be international both in its protagonists and its public.
