Description

The seminar covered the History of cento poetry, its importance in the tradition of Latin poetry, and an activity for students to create their own centos of Robert Burns's poetry. Centos are poems composed completely of fragments of a preexisting work, and they were first composed in late antiquity (around 200) and popular especially until around 500 and then sporadically thereafter. Centos are poems that depend upon some authoritative 'classic', and they are a kind of game for playing with the literary tradition. For Robert Burns, the idea was to take a Scottish classic and make new poems using his words.
