Description
Workshop on Alternative Housing: Ethnographic fieldwork on unMonastery (a co-living/co-working collective)unMonastery is a large network of activists, artists, hackers, designers, social innovators, aspiring to become a 21st century secular monastic order. Arriving as strangers in new places, they bring their skills and global network to get involved in local communal work. In the last year they have produced several publications and currently working on a toolkit, among other things. The unMonastery is also a place where a group of unMonasterians live, – but collective life based on the monastic model continues to break down. What are the possible ways to re-imagine a residential monastic community at this particular moment in history? This workshop tells the story of unMonastery as an idea and as a concrete experiment in the last 20 months: its successes and failures through ethnographic fieldwork. I
