Speaking Out: Tackling Accent Bias at an Elite University

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesPublic Engagement – Public lecture/debate/seminar

Description

The 93% Club Edinburgh, Tackling Elitism and The Department of Linguistics and English Language at The University of Edinburgh have worked together to design an evening event which will explore accent bias and linguistic discrimination at elite universities.

The event will be an opportunity to share experiences of accent bias and linguistic discrimination at the university, as well as discuss some possible solutions.

We will hear from two leading researchers working on language and social (in)justice:

- Dr. Ian Cushing, Manchester Metropolitan University

- Professor Julia Snell, the University of Leeds

The event will be concluded with a panel discussion that will include staff members, students, and EDI representatives. No knowledge of linguistics is needed and there will be an opportunity to ask questions throughout the evening.
