'The Carrier Bag of Tricks: Unlearning Through Unwinnable Games

Drawing on Ursula K. Le Guin's “Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction,” this workshop invited participants to move beyond dominant, winning hero-centered narratives toward collective experiences that critically embrace multiplicity, paradox, and the “survival of the friendliest.” Together, through a peer-to-peer learning approach, participants exercise the ‘reflexive and creative play muscle’ through exploration, speculation, and iteration on how winnable and unwinnable games can become practices for dismantling colonial thinking and cultivating deeper trust. Participants were an interdisciplinary mix of invited artists, social workers, academics, and staff members from the British Council.
The workshop was funded through the award of a £900 Edinburgh Futures Institute 'Small Projects and Events Fund' grant.
