Description

Roslin Instiute Doors Open Day - Stamp out Scrapie workshop

In collaboration with Wilfred Goldman, I invented some props and activities to inform the public of TSE work in particular scrapie in sheep and Wilfreds involvement in the elimination of scrapie susceptible genes in the national flock. The activities involved explaining what a protein was and how misfolding leads to disease(bracelet activity –make your own protein from “building blocks” of amino acids), a simple protein assay – (be a scientist dress up -which sample has protein?) microscopy (diagnose disease) hopgene fun(floormat with the amino acid arrangements of susceptible and resistant genes. Wilfred provided posters to explain his work to adults. Karen Brown and Karen Fernie assisted.
