Description
A research seminar held in the Claus Moser Room, British Museum, London.
Based on Professor Dorrian's research in the Department of Prints and Drawings, British Museum, this seminar examines different sketchbook practices referring to items from the BM and other collections. More broadly, the talk examines the sketchbook as a document of the self, its connection with diaries and other notebook forms, and its relation with early photography. The development and historical transformations of the concept of the sketch are also explored, including its emergence in the later eighteenth century as a genre of writing.
The talk is followed by a discussion in the Prints and Drawing Study Room, in which specific sketchbooks referred to in the presentation will be on display.
