Description
This paper discusses an ongoing experiment in using assessment to drive student engagement in independent research in Japanese Studies at the University of Edinburgh (theme 3). The message is that even when presented with a huge challenge, such as conducting a dissertation in 2nd year, with the proper support, suitably aligned learning goals and assessment strategies, and appropriately high expectations, students will rise to the challenge.
