Description

At Umeå University, Lotta Vikström with colleagues have established a cross-disciplinary team researching disability, a few of whom organize this workshop. The team enjoys funding from one Wallenberg Foundation (Stiftelsen Marcus och Amalia Wallenbergs Minnesfond) and from the European Research Council (ERC Consolidator Grant). This enables the team to examine the life courses of individuals with disabilities and their opportunity structures from 19th-century Sweden until today. Thanks to the above Wallenberg Foundation, which generously funds this scientific event, 30 scholars from Sweden and abroad will attend the workshop to exchange disability results at Umeå Folkets Hus, in June 2016. Three workshop themes and keynotes Presentations of three keynote speakers (Darren Chadwick, Mark Priestley and Margrit Shildrick) and the delegates will generate debates about where disability research stands today and how people experience and challenge disability across the life course with regard to three workshop themes: 1) education and work; 2) partnership and family life; and 3) opportunities through cultural, sport and social activities, off- and online. How the mass media or social media depict or give voice to such experiences are also of interest to the workshop. Aims with the workshop The purpose of the workshop is twofold. One aim is to promote the Umeå team and advance its contacts with international disability scholars to stimulate collaborative work on the themes we research. Second, by uniting scholars crossing disciplinary and national borders the workshop seeks to take the diverse study of disability further through establishing solid networks between the delegates and discussing joint ideas for the future. These ideas may concern thematic disability issues in journals or other publications, the exchange of guest research visits, the organizing of new conferences/workshops or thematic disability sessions at upcoming ones.
