Uncanny Technologies: the body as site of impact

Activity: Academic talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Contribution to webinar series 'Our Extended Bodies' that investigated changes in the definition of our human condition as our bodies become ever more entwined with the machines we build. £vent supported by IDEA, the research team investigating Interdisciplinarity in Anglophone Studies at the University of Lorraine, as well as the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (UFR ALL) in Metz, and the Ecole doctorale Humanités Nouvelles/Fernand Braudel.

My talk drew on my practice research in creative writing to suggest how a contemporary version of the uncanny, one that recontextualises the phenomenon defined by Freud 100 years ago, is a particularly useful tool for illuminating and interrogating the impact of technology on the body.
